How to remove Quick access from File Explorer in Windows 10

Microsoft is adding lot of changes to File Explorer in Windows 10 Operating System. Microsoft has added new icons, user interface tweaks and listing the new drives outside of This PC and replaced the Favorites listing in the favor of new Quick Access. Coming to the quick access, it is the new default location when you open File Explorer and it helps the users by listing the links of most frequently accessed files and folders. This content is grouped under Frequent folders and Recent files.  By default settings can display up to ten folders and twenty files.

Although quick access is the very good feature in Windows 10 Operating System, but not everyone likes it. So here we will show how to remove the quick access from the navigation pane in File Explorer.

How to remove Quick access from File Explorer in Windows 10

  • Note that, before removing quick access, don’t forget to set the File Explorer to access This PC by default. If you don’t do this, then you may get the error like below.

Disable-QuickAccess

  • For this navigate to View and click on Options to access Folder options and on General tab, change Open File Explorer to This PC.

  • Remember that quick access doesn’t delete the File Explorer history, so it is recommended to disable Show recently used files in quick access and Show frequently used folders in quick access and then click on the Clear button to delete the complete File Explorer history.
  • Press Win+R keys to launch RUN dialog box and type regedit and press Enter to open Registry Editor.
  • Now navigate to the below path
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6}
  • You need to change the permissions of the shell folder, so right click on ShellFolder and select Permissions and then click on Advanced button.
  • Now at the top of Advanced Security Settings for ShellFolder, change the ownership of folder to Administrators. For this click on Change and then click on Advanced and on Find Now button. Now select Administrators from the search results and then click on OK, then click on Apply and then OK and click on OK again to exit from the ShellFolder permissions box.
  • Inside the Shell Folder, double click on Attributes and change data value from a0100000 to a0600000 and then click on OK.
  • Restart your Windows 10 PC and then navigate to the File Explorer, how you shouldn’t see the quick access on the navigation pane.

That’s it, this is how to disable the quick access from the File Explorer in Windows 10. If you want to enable it back then just change the data attributes from a0600000 to a0100000 and then click on OK.
