How to hide disk partitions in Windows

It is very important to protect the data on your computer, as it may contain some sensitive data. Now you can protect the data on your PC using encryption techniques, but previously then only way to protect the data is hiding the drives or folders from plain sight. Though this is not the reliable method, but this is still the legible to secure the less important data without using the encryption, complex passwords and other stuff. In this article we are showing the two different ways to hide the drives or partitions One method is using the command prompt and other method is using Disk management app.

How to hide disk partitions in Windows

Using command prompt

  • Press Win+R keys to open RUN dialog box and type cmd and hit enter. This will open command prompt window and type diskpart command and press enter.
  • This will open diskpart console and here enter list volume command and this will list all the drives on your Windows PC.

  • From the list of the volumes, select the one which you would like to hide using the following command.
    select drive #number

    In the above command replace #number string with the actual drive number.

  • After selecting the drive, you need to remove the drive letter from the list to hide the particular partition. For that execute the below command.
    remove letter driveLetter

    In the above command replace driveletter with the actual drive letter which you want to delete.

  • After executing the command, the drive letter will be removed and you will not see it in the File Explorer.
  • If you want to display the drive again, then use the below command
    assign letter driveLetter

    In the above command replace driveletter with the actual drive letter which you want to mount.

Using Disk Management app

If you find it difficult using command prompt, then you can use the Disk management app for this task to be done.

  • If you are using Windows 8, then press Win+X keys and from the options select Disk Management option. If you are using Windows 7, then search for disk management in the start menu.
  • In the disk management window, right click on the drive which you would like to hide and select Change drive letter and path options.

  • This will open small window and here click on Remove button. This will popup a warning dialog box and here click on Yes to continue.
  • That’s it, you have now successfully hidden the partition on the Windows PC.
  • If you want to unhide the drive in future click on the particular drive and select the option Change drive letter and paths and click on Add button to add the drive letter.
  • This will open a small window with the name Add drive letter or path. By default Windows will select the drive automatically. If you want to select other drive then choose the drive letter from the drop down and click on OK button.

That’s it, now the drive is unhided and now you can find the partition in the File explorer. It is very simple to unmount and mount the drives or partitions in Windows PC. But remember that this method doesn’t offer complete protection for the drive. For complete protection you need to apply some encryption techniques.
