How to enable Internet Explorer to restore last browsing session

When you accidentally close the browser or if you PC shutdowns accidentally, then the work you are doing on your browser and the tabs you opened will be closed. Here restoring the last browsing session feature helps so much. Most of the modern browsers support restoring last browsing session, but Internet Explorer doesn’t come with this feature by default. Using Group Policy

  • Press Win+R keys to launch RUN dialog box and type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open Local group policy editor. 
  • Now in the left side pane, navigate to
    User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Internet Control Panel -> General Page
  • Now in the right side pane, you will find a key named Start Internet Explorer with tabs from last browsing session set to Not Configured by default.

  • Double click on this key and this will open a window and select Enabled option and then click on Apply and OK. Exit from the group policy editor and restart your PC for the changes to take place.

Using Registry

  • Press Win+R keys to launch RUN dialog box and type regedit and press Enter to open Registry editor.
  • Here navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet Explorer
  • Now in the left side pane, right click on the Internet Explorer key and select New > key. Label the newly created key as Continuous Browsing. Select this newly created key and and in the right side pane, right click and select New > DWORD value and name this DWORD as Enable.

  • Double click on it to open edit DWORD value box and enter Value Data as to allow Internet Explorer to start from the previous session. Now click on OK and exit from the Registry Editor. Restart your computer for the changes to take place.
