How to disable driver updates through Windows update

Whenever you connect a new device or peripheral to your Windows PC, Windows will try to install the particular device driver automatically and in some cases it even try to update your device driver through regular Windows update. Actually this is the most convenient way as you don’t  need to manually search for the drivers for each and every device you have connected to your Windows PC.

Although it is convenient, it is frustrating some times like when you have specifically installed an older version of the device driver and Windows updates it automatically disregarding your requirement. Let us see here how to disable the automatic driver updates through windows update.

How to disable driver updates through Windows update

1. Using hardware settings

  • Press Win+X keys and select option system.
  • This will launch the system window and click on Advanced system settings link.
  • In the system properties window, navigate to hardware tab and click on Device Installation Settings button.

  • Now in Device Installation settings window, select No, let me choose what to do radio button and select Never install driver software from Windows update radio button and click on Save changes.

  • Restart your PC for the changes to take effect.

2. Using Group Policy

  • Press Win+ R keys to launch Registry Editor and type gpedit.msc and press enter to launch Group Policy Editor.
  • Here navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative templates > System > Internet Communication management > Internet Communication Settings.

  • Now find the option Turn off Windows Update device driver searching and double click on it.
  • This will launch additional settings window and select Enabled option and click on Ok to save the changes.

  • Restart your PC for the changes to take place.

3. Using Registry editor

  • Press Win+ R keys to launch Registry Editor and type regedit and press enter to launch Registry Editor.
  • In Windows Registry editor windows, navigate to the following key.

  • In the right side pane find SearchOrderConfig key. By default the value of the key is set to 1, which means that the automatic updates are enabled. Double click on it to change the value.
  • This will open Edit DWORD value window and change the value to and click on OK to save the changes.
  • That’s it, this will disable the driver updates through Windows update. Restart your PC for the changes to take place.
