The Windows 10 Photos application is capable of finding exact duplicates of the files stored in your image collection. By default, it displays them in a single file. This can be very confusing. If you prefer to view duplicate photos while managing your image collection, you should disable the “Linked Duplicates” feature. Here’s how it works.

Windows 10 comes with a photo application that replaced Windows Photo Viewer and Photo Gallery. Your tile is pinned to the Start menu. Photos provides easy ways to view and edit photos from the user’s local drive or OneDrive cloud storage.

Windows 10 includes this application in place of the good old Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and the Photos application is ready for use with most image file formats. The Photos application lets you browse, share, and edit your photos and image collection.

Linked Duplicates is a controversial feature for users who want to see all the files they own. In fact, the function hides some of the files you have in different locations by displaying them as a single file, so users don’t realize that there are duplicates that take up valuable disk space. If you are not satisfied with the default behavior of Linked Duplicates, you can quickly disable it. Note: You must be running Photos version 2018.18081.12810.0 or later to access the Linked Duplicates option.
