How to change pagefile size in Windows

If you are using Windows on your PC, then you will be getting a suggestion in the Internet telling you to change pagefile location and size in your Windows computer. Changing the pagefile size and location isn’t that hard, but it is hidden deep inside the Windows settings to avoid unwanted changes. IN this tutorial we are going to explain how to change the pagefile size and location in Windows.

Pagefile is similar to virtual memory in your Windows computer. Whenever windows runs on low RAM memory, it creates a hidden file with pagefile.sys name and dumps all the least-used memory into this file. Like this, Windows can clear the physical RAM space for any excess work.

How to change pagefile size in Windows

  • Go to start menu and search for System and click on it to access Windows Advanced system settings. If you are using Windows 8 on your PC, then press Win+X keys and select System from the power user menu.
  • On the next screen, click on Advanced system settings option in the left pane and this will open Advanced system properties window.
  • In the next window, click on Advanced tab and click on Settings under performance section and this will open performance options window.
  • In the performance options window click on Advanced tab and click on Change button at right bottom corner.


  • This will open virtual memory window and here uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Select the paging file drive and custom size radio button. Under custom size radio button enter initial size and maximum size of the pagefile and click on OK to save the changes.


That’s it you have changed the pagefile size and once done, close all the windows and restart your system to apply the changes.

How to change pagefile location

  • Follow the steps 1 through 4 above to change the pagefile location. Now in the Virtual Memory uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives and select No Paging file radio button and click on set button and this will disable paging file feature effectively.
  • In the next windows select the drive where you would like to store the paging file and select System managed size radio button and click on set button to apply changes and click on ok button to save the changes and close all the windows.


  • That’s it, restart your PC and you have changed paging file location in Windows.
  • Now if you go to the drive you have selected you will find paging file pagefile.sys.

Make sure that you have changed folder options to show protected OS files. It is very easy to change the paging file settings.
