How to block .NET framework installation on Windows

 How to block .NET framework installation on Windows

Generally the upgrade to the .NET framework is offered through the Windows update and the Windows server update services and they are also available as the web or offline installer downloads. It is not recommended to block the installation of any latest version of the .NET framework, but if you are having any compelling reasons to disable them in the situations such as Automatic updates feature in enabled, then you need to modify the registry to block the installation of .NET framework temporarily.

  • Press Win+R keys to open RUN dialog box and run regedit command to open Registry Editor and here navigate to the below registry key.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftNET Framework SetupNDP
  • In the left pane right click on the NDP folder and create a New key and name it as WU.
  • Right click on the newly created WU key > New > DWORD and name it as BlockNetFramework45 and in the value data box, set the value to and click on OK.

  • Digits in the above name refer to the Framework version 4.5. For example if you want to block installation of version 4 then create the DWORD value with the name BlockNetFramework4.
