Fix: Windows unable to start WLAN AutoConfig service

WiFi connection issues are the general problems you will face on Windows 8 and we have discussed lot of wireless connection problems in our previous posts. Here we are going to discuss about a strange issue where your Windows system is unable to identify or detect any WiFi or wireless network. This might be due to the hardware which you can check it from the Devices Manager. Here you need to check whether the wireless driver is working properly or not. If you are sure that it is a hardware issue, then you need to visit the service center to get it fixed.

If you find nothing is wrong on the hardware side, then check whether WLAN AutoConfig service is working properly in the services window. You can check this by typing services.msc in the RUN dialog box. If WLAN AutoConfig service is not working on your system, then you will get the below error. Here is how to fix this issue.

Windows unable to start WLAN AutoConfig service

  • Press Win+R keys to open RUN dialog box and type regedit and press enter to launch Registry Editor.
  • Here navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesDhcp

Windows-Couldnt-Detect-Any-WiFi-Networks

  • Here find the registry multi-string DependOnService key in the right side pane. Double click on it and modify its value data.
  • This will open small Edit multi string window, here remove everything except Afd. Click on OK and exit from the Registry Editor and restart your computer for the issue to get fixed.

That’s it, this is one of the method to fix the WiFi connection issues especially when Windows is unable to start the WLAN AutoConfig service.
